Max Payne 3

Part 3: The Guns of Max Payne 3, Part Three

Part Three: Shotguns, Rocket Launchers, and Misc.

The Benelli M4 Super 90 is a shotgun. That's really all I have to say about it. You can find it in a couple different spots though it's mostly used by Cracha Preto. That thing I said in I think Chapter 6 was wrong: I said that one pellet always goes directly at the crosshair, which is incorrect. What actually happens is that the cone of spread for shotguns in this game is narrow and linear, which means that one pellet is always expelled from the center of the barrel toward the crosshair, modified by the angle it is randomly given. So technically I was equal parts right and wrong, really.

The Franchi SPAS-15 is what I masturbate to and dream about at night. If I could put a ring on its finger I would. It's got a higher cone of pellet spread than the Benelli and is therefore less accurate, but the firerate definitely makes up for it. The gun can be used either semi-auto or pump-action, but Max is smart and uses the former. It also reloads hella fast because the detachable box magazine is easier to use than feeding in each shell individually. Each pellet does as much damage as a PT92 bullet, meaning it's actually kinda overkill! In a literal sense!

The Mossberg 500 Cruiser is used mostly by the Comando Sombra as an alternative to the Cracha Preto's Benelli. The one in the game has a pistol grip for some reason. Its accuracy is straight-up just awful but I will say it's very satisfying to launch Max directly at someone and then blast them with it. It also looks very cool.

The Remington 11-87, also known as the Super Sport, is used by the Cracha Preto in Chapter 12 and I think that's the only place it ever appears! It's a middle-ground between the SPAS-15 and the Benelli, offering semi-auto fire with moderate damage to compensate for the meh-worthy accuracy. Its name is also a misnomer because the Super Sport is a Benelli shotgun that looks virtually identical to the 11-87. It's probably called that because this is the only Remington gun in the game (besides the sawn-off) and Rockstar likely didn't obtain the rights to call it the 11-87 since they already had licensing rights from Benelli for the Super 90.

The Sawed-Off Remington SBS only appears in Chapter 7 which is a damn shame because it's awesome. However it suffers from the same drawbacks as the previous Max Payne games in that its low ammo capacity makes it hard to use in a firefight with more than a few enemies and it doesn't have as much range or stopping power as a full-length shotgun. However, being a sawn-off makes it a one-handed-sized gun, meaning you can dual wield them for maximum 'fuck you Comando Sombra' points.

The M72A2 LAW is weirdly out of place in this game. It's a mainly American-used weapon and it's specifically anti-tank artillery so I'm not sure why a military police group like the UFE would have it in such high stock. If anything they'd have the more common plain ol' RPG, which also appears in this game but never in their hands. In fact, it only ever shows up one time in the whole game!

And hey look, it's the RPG-7. It's basically just a bigger version of the LAW but that's really all I know about it because you never get to use it! Those two screenshots are the only place in the whole game where it shows up!

The DefTech 37mm Grenade Launcher is a rotary grenade launcher that first appeared in Chapter 12. Y'know, during the stealth segment. It can kill basically any enemy in its blast radius in one hit and it can blow up cars and more importantly armored vans and tanks. There's a bug with this weapon where if you go into last stand mode and fire it, the projectile will move too slowly to hit anything because of the bullet time and Max will just die. Alternatively, hitting something extremely close to you in last stand will launch ragdolled Max without doing any damage to you as long as you hit the targeted enemy with it, which can make for some fun physics bugs.

The Barrett M107 is the anti-materiel rifle that blasted Max in the shoulder in Chapter 3. Note that it's not a sniper rifle: anti-materiel rifles are used to penetrate armored vehicles and light tank weapons. If it were real life his forearm would be ripped to shreds and it'd probably have to be amputated but video games are video games and so he got to keep it.

Also, a single Heckler & Koch G3SG/1 appears in Chapter 13. Just the one. It's a pretty good gun but I have no idea how you're supposed to use it in such close quarters.

...aaaaand that's it! That's almost all of the guns in the game. I hope it was a fun read. There are some I left out from the multiplayer but I don't really care because the multiplayer is not important.

I like the guns in this game! They don't follow the normal progression every video game does of "pistol, bigger pistol, submachine gun, machine gun, shotgun, shotgun x2, rocket launcher, special weapon" and instead vary things up quite a bit! Like I said, the multiplayer adds even more guns that I can't even cover because there are so damn many of them. Max Payne 3 is a good video game.
